The Whale Museum News & Events
An East County man is sharing his breathtaking adventure with News 8. His boating trip off the coast of Point Loma became a setting for wildlife photography when a pod of killer whales surrounded him.
Bill Lewis is a weekend warrior. Monday through Friday he works in retail sales, but last week he launched his boat at Shelter Island, and had himself a whale of a time.
It was dawn when Bill headed out past Point Loma in his 22-foot boat. The weather was dead calm, no wind and no swell to speak of.
"It was beautiful, fantastic… it was kind of magical, it was quiet. It was extremely still," he said.
It was just perfect for pictures, which Bill snaps a lot of. An avid boater for the past five years, Bill has seen grey whales, plenty of dolphins and Navy submarines. But nothing like this.
Eight miles out to sea, Bill was suddenly surrounded by more than 30 killer whales.
