The Whale Museum News

Updated: February 22, 2010

Another new L-pod birth confirmed!

On Sunday, February 21, J pod and parts of K and L pods were spotted making their way through the San Juan and Canadian Gulf islands. At this time of the year, this is quite an exciting event! It's not only fun to see the whales but it also gives the researchers the opportunity to document if any whales appear to be missing from the pods and to photograph any new members that have been born since their last visit!

All the calves in J pod were photographed and there appeared to be a new calf spotted amongst some L pod whales. The Center for Whale Research confirmed yesterday that it was a new calf and it appears to belong to L-77 - Matia. This would be her first documented calf. Check out the links below to see photos of the new calf as well as the rest of the whales that were present.
